Poor Oral Hygiene Can Affect Your Health!
Periodontal Medicine simply stated… is a specialty of Dentistry (periodontist) that cares for the supporting tissue structures of the teeth known as the periodontium.
Periodontitis… is the advanced form of gingivitis resulting in the inflammation of the soft tissues surrounding the teeth. This is characterized by swollen, tender gums, that left untreated may lead to eventual loss of teeth.
The condition of periodontitis begins with the deposits of bacterial plaque below the gum line or even on the teeth. The plaque causes irritation and erosion of neighbouring tissue.
This condition is reversible, however, if left untreated the gums begin to recede, eventually exposing the roots of the teeth. Once the bone anchoring the teeth becomes involves, loosening of the teeth may occur to the point where they may fall out.
Deterioration of the alveolar bone supporting the teeth cannot be reversed, however there are treatments available that may stimulate new bone growth.
Consequences of Poor Dental Hygiene
Poor dental hygiene which is the leading cause of plaque deposits creates an inherent susceptibility to other diseases related to the degeneration of connective tissues.
Although it has not been determined that gum disease causes other illnesses, studies and researcher have observed that people with gum disease were more likely to develop heart disease or have difficulty controlling blood sugar.
Symptoms of gum disease include:
- Red or swollen gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Tender or bleeding gums
- Painful chewing
- Loose teeth
- Sensitive teeth
- Receding gums or longer appearing teeth
